Systems Electrical Engineer in Test

Boston Dynamics, Inc.
Full-time
On-site
Waltham Office (POST) United States of America

Boston Dynamics is a world leader in mobile robots, tackling some of the toughest robotics challenges. For years, our awe-inspiring viral videos on YouTube have shown the world what remarkably capable robots can do. We embody cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence in advanced robotics, quickly moving from the research lab into increasingly impactful roles across industrial spaces.

The Systems Engineering, Integration, and Test (SEIT) Department of Boston Dynamics (BD) seeks an experienced System Electrical Engineer in Test to help verify and validate the most capable humanoid robot system in the world.

This role provides hands-on technical support to a peer group of test engineers and technicians. The team will include mechanical, electrical, and software expertise. The System Electrical Engineer in Test reports to the Verification, Validation, & Test Senior Manager and helps BD continue the development of the most capable full-body-manipulating mobile robots in the world.

How you will make an impact:

  • Coordinate across electrical, mechanical, firmware, and technician teams to validate and integrate robot systems into test stands for reliability, verification, and software testing.

  • Oversee and execute the integration of testing fixtures, including instrumentation, wiring, and configurations.

  • Test and validate PCBAs and firmware for critical components of our robot, such as power distribution boards, battery management systems, sensing boards, motor controllers, or compute boards.

  • Contribute to the definition of our PCBA design and test process.

  • Support the review of design artifacts (schematics, layouts, bills of materials) from your peers or external suppliers.

  • Support system integration and test activities by contributing to test execution and debugging.

  • Work alongside reliability engineers to develop and execute accelerated life reliability test specifications for actuators, batteries, structures, bushings, wirings, sensors, and the full system.

  • Support failure analysis efforts for failures resulting from reliability testing.

Required Skills & Experience:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.

  • Solid EE fundamentals with 5+ years' of hands-on experience designing, building, and testing PCBAs and subsystem test stands used for hardware and software validation.

  • Demonstrated experience using Altium (or similar EDA tools) in both schematic capture and layout.

  • Demonstrated experience in the test and debugging of power electronics (motor drivers, switch-mode power supplies), digital electronics (MCUs, FPGAs, Ethernet, USB, SPI, I2C), and analog electronics (filters, ADCs/DACs).

  • General experience in firmware, automation, and controls.

Desirable Skills & Experience:

  • Hardware-in-the-loop testing and system design.

  • Data analysis and visualization.

  • Reliability and robustness, including DFMEA, DVP&R, DOE, root cause analysis, and data analytics.

  • Experience with dyno-based testing systems and motor characterization.

  • Development of repeatable test performance correlating with subjective customer preference.

  • Software tools including: Python, C++, Jama, Jira, Google Suite, Matlab, Arena, Altium, Solidworks, Catia v6, Raspberry Pi, Arduino, Mujoco.

  • Working with product diagnostic software and fault management.
