As an R&D Electrical Technical Specialist at Boston Dynamics, you will be a critical link between the electrical engineering and robot repair teams. You will be the go-to expert for diagnosing and resolving the most complex electrical issues on our Atlas robots, ensuring the operational uptime of our growing fleet. While your initial focus will be on creating a robust electrical repair and diagnostics process, you will also contribute to the validation and testing of new designs. To thrive in this role, you must be a hands-on problem-solver, passionate about tackling challenging hardware problems and preventing future ones.
Boston Dynamics is a world leader in mobile robots, tackling some of the toughest robotics challenges. For years, our awe-inspiring viral videos on YouTube have shown the world what remarkably capable robots can do. Now we are quickly becoming a recognized leader in automation solutions for industrial applications and warehouse logistics.
Day-to-day activities:
Serve as the primary electrical technical specialist for the robot repair team, diagnosing and resolving complex issues to minimize fleet downtime.
Troubleshoot and identify the root cause of electrical system failures on both prototype and operational robots, performing detailed failure analysis.
Work alongside engineering to develop, document, and execute robust and repeatable test plans and diagnostic procedures for common repair scenarios.
Provide critical hands-on support for the initial build and bring-up of new prototype robots.
Design and model test fixtures and harnesses in 3D CAD to improve the efficiency and accuracy of both repair and validation testing.
Create, manage, and track detailed JIRA tickets for hardware bugs, repairs, and required revisions, ensuring a clear feedback loop to the design team.
Collaborate with design engineers by providing data-driven feedback from field and repair findings to improve the reliability and serviceability of future designs.
Meticulously document test results, repair procedures, and analysis in a clear and organized manner.
Required Skills:
Demonstrated experience interpreting schematic capture and PCB layout.
Extensive hands-on experience debugging complex electronics and electro-mechanical systems.
Experience with lab equipment including oscilloscopes, power supplies, programmable loads, and thermal probes.
Proficiency with PCB rework for diagnostic and repair purposes.
Experience with communication interfaces, e.g., CAN, Ethernet, SPI, and I2C.
Proficiency with 3D modeling software (e.g., SolidWorks, Altium, etc.) for fixture design.
Experience with issue tracking systems such as JIRA.
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to clearly and concisely report test results and data.
Ability to adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced R&D and repair environment.
